Do Solar Panels Cool Your Roof ? Or Make It Hotter ?
Installing solar panels to your roof is one of the most popular renewable energy source that can reduce the dependency on utility grid electricity. In addition to providing green and clean energy , one benefit of installing solar panels that is overlooked is that they can help to reduce the temperature of your buildings.
Solar panels installed on a roof acts as the first line of defense against heat and other various harsh elements of weather. Solar panels absorb the heat and radiation of the sunlight and reduces the amount of heat reaching the roof while reducing the temperatures of the building.
A study done by the researchers at UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering found out that, solar panels installed on a roof top can reduce the amount of heat reaching the roof by 38%. They further noticed that the roof exposed to direct sunlight was in fact 5 Fahrenheit Degrees warmer than the roof area with solar panels installed. The team used thermal image technology to determine that the roof area where solar panels act as shade has a relatively lower room temperature.
All in all adding a solar system to your roof can further reduce your energy bill by generating clean energy in addition to reducing the need of continuously running air conditioning equipment is an added benefit.
